Independent Study

What is Independent Study?
In PYLUSD, Independent Study is for when a student will be out of school for 3 to 19 days. The teacher gives work that matches what the class is learning, and the student must turn it in on the day they return.

A parent and the school sign an agreement two weeks before it begins, and families should schedule a meeting with Ms. Carmona to review the contract. Parents should schedule a meeting as soon as they know the dates that Independent Study is needed.

Independent Study should look similar to a school day. Students receive assignments that match the number of minutes they would be learning in class:

Grades TK/K: 180 minutes
Grades 1 to 3: 230 minutes
Grades 4 to 6: 240 minutes

Vacations should not happen during the school year, but if a student is placed on Independent Study and completes all the work, the absences will not count against them. If a student goes on vacation without Independent Study or does not finish the assigned work, the student will receive Unexcused Absences for each day missed.
